Mel McMahon was born in Lurgan in 1968. His work has appeared widely in journals and anthologies and has been broadcast on BBC Radio Ulster. He has been shortlisted for several literary prizes and was a prizewinner in the FSNI Competition (2015).
Mel's work has been nominated twice for the Forward Prize for best individual poem. His first collection, Out Of Breath, was published by Summer Palace Press in 2016. His most recent collection, Beneath Our Feet, explores the last few years in the life of World War One poet Wilfred Owen. He was invited to Ors in France in 2018 as a key contributor at the events to mark the centenary of Owen’s death. He is currently Head of English at the Abbey Grammar School in Newry, County Down.
